System Information
Operating system: Linux-6.1.0-13-amd64-x86_64-with-glibc2.36 64 Bits, X11 UI
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.6.0 NVIDIA 525.147.05

Blender Version
Broken: version: 4.2.0 Beta, branch: blender-v4.2-release, commit date: 2024-06-26 19:30, hash: 4e4d8476c49f
Worked: 4.1.1 because EEVEE Next wasn't accessible

Short description of error
[Depth of field border is sometimes harsh and squared like somewhere in code would be just grater than instead of smooth gradient ramp.]

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
This is kind of hard since this bug becomes apparent when I use volumes and depth of field, at first I thought that it's low res mesh but no it shows also on denser mesh. No idea why this is, only that it's DOF related and looks bit different on render, but still present tried to reproduce it on sth simpler, but I just see it when file is already in quite advanced stage. Camera settings like blades have no impact, just changing to Cycles/Workbench helps.
[Based on the default startup or an attached .blend file (as simple as possible)]

Are you able to share a .blend file with us that has the issue?

I think so, but I it will be messy since I'm a bit messy with files removed some materials which I can't redistribute, rest should be fine mesh is from old free human generator. It's visible in render view from camera especially in viewport when I zoom in cam view. It will still take some time to load but in cam workspace should be visible like in the pic.

With the .blend file provided, I can reproduce the issue. I'll do some more investigating and see if I can provide extra details.

Here's a simplified file. Steps to reproduce is to just enter EEVEE rendered viewport mode and zoom in or out until you see the issue.

Here's what I've discovered from simplifying the scene:

  • The block artifacts seem to occur if there is noise in the area where DOF transitions from "in focus" to "slightly out of focus". This noise can come from shadow tracing, ray traced global illumination, or even textures.
  • Turning on jittered camera DOF seems to resolve the issue (I'm unsure if this resolves the issue or just hides it)
