Multiresolution Modifier breaks mask when subdividing in Object Mode #123859

Short description of error
Subdividing multiresolution in object mode seems to remove the mask from the new sculpt layer. Entering sculpt mode and subdividing again causes a distorted version of the mask to be created, reminiscent of the broken behavior in 4.0.2 that occurs even when subdividing in sculpt mode. This seems to be a residue of a bug mostly fixed between 4.0.2 and 4.1.1.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  1. Add a default cube, subdivide in edit mode a couple of times.
  2. Paint a mask in sculpt mode.
  3. Enter object mode, add a multiresolution modifier, and press "subdivide."
  4. Re-enter sculpt mode. The mask will be gone on the new sculpt level (but present on the lower one).
  5. As a bonus, press subdivide again while in sculpt mode. A 4.0.2-style broken mask will be added to the new sculpt level.

Thanks for the report. Can confirm. Appears to be failing in older versions as well (3.6 LTS)
