Crash when rendering with AMD HIP-RT enabled #125359

System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.22631-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE ATI Technologies Inc. 4.6.0 Core Profile Context 24.7.1.240711

Blender Version
Broken: version: 4.2.0, branch: blender-v4.2-release, commit date: 2024-07-16 06:20, hash: a51f293548ad

Short description of error
When rendering with the new HIP-RT feature, blender will crash.

I tested this with this scene from polyhaven https://dl.polyhaven.org/file/ph-assets/Scenes/pine_forest.zip
When rendering, it will show the error "out of GPU memory" at minute 1:40. At around 3:15 it will crash entirely. No pixels will show in the render view during that process.

If i disable HIP-RT, the first pixels will appear at 2:18, and it will proceed to render normally

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

When rendering with the new HIP-RT feature, blender will crash.

This implies the issue occurs every time you use HIP-RT. But you reference a specific scene that has issues. So does this issue happen on every scene? Or just this one, and other heavy scenes?

When rendering with HIP-RT on my computer (AMD RX 7800XT), this is what I observe:

  • For the first minute and a bit, Cycles is preparing the scene for rendering.
  • Then there's a "Out of GPU memory" warning, which is expected. The scene was consuming all 16GB of VRAM, and all 32GB of RAM, while continuing to add more data.
  • Then the second render layer starts, and after a few more minutes I get a "Out of GPU memory" error again, not a crash like the report.

I can also confirm that turning off HIP-RT and going back to BVH2 allows the scene to render with reduced memory usage compared to HIP-RT.

Overall, I'd say HIP-RT not rendering with out of memory warnings is expected in this scene, unless there's a bug where HIP-RT consumes too much memory.

@Thane5 How much RAM does your computer have? A difference in RAM capacity, and what other apps you had running at the time could be having a impact on whether or not Blender crashes.
Also does Blender produce a crash log and can you share that? https://docs.blender.org/manual/en/latest/troubleshooting/crash.html#crash-log

I attached the crash log here.

My PC has 32GB of ram. Before starting Blender, i had 27GB free. I have not seen any crashes in other scenes so far, so i assume that the crash must be due to the massive size of this one.

The crash is occuring in the GPU driver when trying to manage memory. I would say the out of memory results are some what expected, and the GPU driver crashing is probably not caused by Blender, but by the large amounts of memory from this complex scene.

I will close this report.
