Add/Mix Shaders Cause Artifacting in EEVEE Next #125514

Short description of error
When using an Add Shader or Mix Shader node in materials I get a lot of artifacting and noise in the Material Preview and Rendered views as well as in the final render.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  1. Make a new material.
  2. Add two shaders. (I'm using two diffuse shaders, but the behavior also shows up with Principled BSDF) together with either a Mix Shader or Add Shader node.
  3. Switch to Material Preview or Rendered mode

The attached images are the render outputs.

The noise from the mixing/adding of shaders is expected as the shaders are sampling stocastically in 4.2. However the appearance of the noise has been improved in 4.3 and will likely be improved in an upcoming 4.2.X release.

Can you confirm that the issue is improved in 4.3 https://builder.blender.org/download/daily/


You've also attached a video of the issue and the artifacts that occur as you change orthographic views. This is a side effect of the temporal reprojection system and how it handles the noise. The artifacts have reduced as a side effect of the reduction of noise in 4.3.

@Alaska - just checked in 4.3 and you're correct. It all looks good, though I do get a bit of a hang when switching to EEVEE/Material Preview, and when I initially add the shaders together.

I'll just add some extra notes:

I do get a bit of a hang when switching to EEVEE/Material Preview, and when I initially add the shaders together.

This is expected as you have to recompile these shaders as you're using them for the first time again.

looking forward to the potential 4.2.X release.

4.2.1 is unlikely to have the fix as different issue needs to be fixed before this fix can make it into a 4.2.X release.
