System Information
Operating system: macOS-14.6.1-arm64-arm-64bit 64 Bits
Graphics card: Metal API Apple M3 1.2
Blender Version
Broken: version: 4.2.3 LTS, branch: blender-v4.2-release, commit date: 2024-10-14 15:20, hash:
0e22e4fcea03
Worked: (newest version of Blender that worked as expected)
Short description of error
File mostly contains Geometry Nodes. When the Distributed Points in Volume has a high density, then Blender can often crash when you try to save the file. The crash sometimes cause the OS to appear to reboot too.
The Mac is perfectly capable of handling the file, even with 1000 density.
This issue occurs also on a Mac Studio Pro M2 with 32G Memory, 60Core GPU
Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Load the attached file
Change density on Distribute Points In Volume Geometry Node to 1000
Save the file
Some times there is a huge lag, sometimes there is a crash.
Tried setting the viewport to Shading and other modes, no change on preventing the issue from occurring.
Cannot confirm on 4.2.1 and 4.4 Alpha, it may be a MacOS specific issue.
Lags are to be expected, the realized geometry has about 32.4 million polygons.
System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.22631-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.6.0 NVIDIA 566.14
I was personally unable to reproduce the issue here.
You say the often crashes implying it doesn't happen every time. How likely is it to have the issue?
Are you able to test some things and see if it helps:
File -> Defaults -> Load Factory Settings
from the top of Blender to temporarily load factory settingsEdit -> Preferences
from the top of BlenderPreferences
window go to theSave & Load
tabFile Preview Type
toNone
Do you have a crash log?
Report
button, then copy the text on that screen toa text file and share it here. This obviously doesn't work if your computer reboots.
