Artifacts when baking normals #18989

%%%Hey guys,

When i bake the normals from the HP in the attached file, to the LP plane, i am getting artifacts.

They range from single pixels being the wrong colour to jagged edges where straight lines should be.

My System is the following:-

AMD Athlon 5600+
Vista 64bit SP2
Nvidia Geforce 8800GTX with 186.18 drivers.
8GB DDR2 RAM
Blender 2.49a (64bit)

I get the same results in 2.48a (64Bit) also but the artifacts are much worse.

The image is 4k, so be cautious when rendering as it takes lots of memory :P

Any ideas?

Thanks for looking :)%%%

%%%Hi Andrew,

Is the bug still there ? can you test in the render25 branch ?

%%%Hey Diego,

I just tested with the Render Branch (28935 win32) and the errors still appear.

Attached is a copy of the result with the errors highlighted.

Hope that helps!

Thanks for looking :)%%%

%%%The problem here is floating point precision, because the triangles line up exactly with pixels here. It's worse because baking doesn't support antialiasing, if that was added it would be much less noticeable. Moving the meshes slightly or changing the image resolution avoids the problem.

I'm not going to consider this a bug, the code could be tweaked for better precision but this kind of problem is impossible to avoid with raytracing without introducing other problems. Some raytracers provide a tweakable epsilon value that provides a tradeoff, but I'd rather not add that.%%%

%%%Still present on 2.56...................
Quite noticeable when baking normalmaps from bumpmaps. Workaround are to make a normalmap of twice the scale, and then scale it down in a image editor later.%%%
