%%%Windows 7 32-bit
ATI Radeon Mobility 4100 HD
Blender 2.56a

from bge import render

render.setGLSLMaterialSetting("shaders", False)

The above code works only when one scene is displayed on screen. When overlay or background scenes are in use enabling/disabling shaders with the above code has no effect.%%%

%%%While making an example I discovered that in order for the aforementioned code to work on multiple scenes it must be run from a python controller attached to an object in the scene you wish to enable/disable shaders on.

For example if you have a game scene + an overlay HUD scene and wish to turn off shaders on both scenes you'll have to run the python script with the aforementioned code twice, called once from an object in each scene.%%%

%%%I took a quick look, and setGLSLMaterialSetting() getGLSLMaterialSetting() both alter the current Blender scene's GameData. However, as you found it, this makes the setting a per scene setting instead of an engine setting, which just doesn't make much sense. I don't know the best way to rework it at the moment. Maybe some other devs can offer advice.%%%
