%%%--- Operating System, Graphics card ---

Debian GNU/Linux. I'm using the official package from Debian for Blender 2.63.
I'm using the on-board Radeon subsystem, but I doubt this affects this issue.

- Blender version with error, and version that worked ---

Encountered this problem with 2.63.0, verified same behavior in 2.59.
Don't know about other versions, but it's not hard to work-around.

- Short description of error ---

I can create a shape key with a name containing quotation marks, like this:

Mouth-"W"

And Blender doesn't complain about this. However, if I then attempt to set a Keyframe using this shape key, I get a very cryptic error message:

"Could not insert keyframe, as RNA path is invalid for the given ID..."

I realized something strange was up because keyframing other shape keys on the same mesh gave me no trouble. Renaming the shape key to avoid the quotation marks seems to solve the problem.

I think any of the following would solve this:

  • modify the keyframe code to escape quotation marks,
  • generate an error when attempting to name a shape key with quotation marks, or
  • generate a message that mentions quotation marks when this happens.

Obviously, the work-around is "Don't use quotation marks in shape key names". This is an acceptable limitation, just not a very useful error message.

- Steps for others to reproduce the error (preferably based on attached .blend file) ---
  • Create a mesh with a shape key
  • Edit the name to something containing quotation marks - e.g. 'Key-"A"'
  • Attempt to set a keyframe on the shape key's value, using the "I" key (It actually won't offer the keyframe option if you just right click)
  • Note that eliminating the quotation marks makes it work.

(The attached Blend file just has a simple example of a shape key named w/ quotation marks).

(If this oversteps the line from "bug" to "feature request", I apologize)%%%
