Old sculpt data available to mesh after deleting multires modifier #35515

%%%--- Operating System, Graphics card ---
OSX 10.6.8
MacPro dualXeon 16 threads, 24 GB RAM.
ATI HD 5880

also tested on ubuntu 13.04
NVIDIA 540M GT
intel i5 8GB RAM

- Blender version with error, and version that worked ---
  • r57019

    • Short description of error ---
Opening a file with no multires modifier still has data from old sculpt session

    • Steps for others to reproduce the error (preferably based on attached .blend file) ---

  • Unzip and open attached file
  • Add multires modifier
  • You should get displacements from old session, even though the file should not have any such data.

Notes: This is probably related to #35513 since the bug was caused after using "Apply base". I am not 100% sure if it's related but mentioning just in case.%%%

%%%There may be a conflict with normals. How did it came up I can't say.
Still, behavior remains weird at least.
Nevermind, the other post still stands. %%%

%%%OK, found it.
Normals are fine.

  1. After some sculpting in multires
  2. Apply base in multires panel
  3. Go to level 0
'a warning that sculpting is not supported on this 0 level"
  4. Delete the modifier. Do not apply first!

Now we have a weird looking mesh, Just enter sculpting mode, try a stroke, undo and you have the mesh as it should look like after apply base.

It's a minor and weird bug IMO. %%%

%%%The original issue is not related on multires modifier, at least not on creating new one. Simply toggling edit mode will change mesh deformation.

How did you produce such kind of mesh?%%%

%%%LOL
go to 0 level
Just delete the modifier. Do not apply.

About the warning that sculpting is not supported at 0 level:
Indeed, try to sculpt and it doesn't work. Neither you can see the applied base, you see something simply wrong. Stroke (nothing) and undo. Now you see the applied base mesh, now you can sculpt at 0 level.
BTW, I posted it and tested it via hangout google. With some blender friends. It is confirmed alright. Under various hardwares and OSs. %%%

%%%This is in fact just normals are out of date, which i've fixed today already. To "repair" this file simply toggle edit mode.

Thanks to Brecht giving a clue here :)%%%
