System Information
Debian Jessie (SID)
Intel 17
24GB DDR3
AMD Radeon 2GB GDDR5 (OSS Driver)
spacenavd (latest git version as of Feb, 2014)

Blender Version
Blender 2.69.0 (Debian packaged version)

Short description of error
When using a 3DConnexion SpaceNavigator 3D mouse (NDOF), with the 'Lock to Cursor' option disabled, with pivot set to cursor, the model rotates around in very strange ways. It appears to be 'somewhat' related to the mouse pointer position, but not in any understandable way. When 'Lock to cursor' is enabled, rotation functions as expected.

Also, there appears to be a bug in how the rotation direction functions at times (an off-by-one error?). If I use the numpad numbers to hop between ortho views, sometimes with Ctrl, the NDOF will get confused and the directionality reverses. Cycling the numpad ortho views with and without Ctrl will eventually 'jiggles the handle', and it will correct the directionality again.

Also, in perspective mode, rotation is always really erratic and very 'jumpy', often instantly zooming deep into the model for no reason when no zoom pressure is used. Essentially it is unusable in perspective mode unless the model is zoomed way out.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  • uncheck 'Lock to Cursor' and use the NDOF to see odd, incomprehensable rotation behavior. Move the mouse pointer to different places on the screen while rotating. Try to find some rhyme or reason for how or why it's rotation the way it is. Introduce any kind of pan, then use shift-c to recenter and the model disappears offscreen somewhere.

  • It's hard to give an exact set of steps to make it reverse direction. It will work fine for a while, then, sometimes after a mouse zoom out, zoom in ('Lock to Cursor' unchecked) to recenter the model, the attempt to rotate with the NDOF it will suddenly be reversed. Banging on 7,1,3 and/or ctrl-7, ctrl-1, ctrl-3 will eventually set it back.

  • NDOF with perspective on is just really erratic. rotation while trying to pull the model in will just freak it out, and while already zoomed in close, doing a slow rotate, it will often just instantly be inside the center of the model inexplicably. Further rotation will jump it back out.

Other thoughts
I use this same device with SolidWorks running in a VM, and it behaves as expected.

If you need any config data, let me know.

This report references a few issues, fixed in master.

  • Speed calculation was incorrect in perspective mode.
  • NDOF was using auto-depth and rotating about the mouse cursor when set in the preferences.
  • Cursor lock wasn't taken into account.
