Darkened volume scatter rendering #40220

Using win64.
Tested on 2.70a official, and builder versions blender-2.70-064ef3f-win64-vc12, and** blender-2.70-064ef3f-win64

Volume rendering has changed greatly from 2.70a. For homogenous volume scatter shader direct light seems to have no effect. Additionally for the vc12 builds the effect is much more extreme, or builds up much faster.

Tested with a simple UV sphere with nothing on it but a volume scatter shader, homogenous, no anisotropy, no surface, no absorption. The two additional spheres are there to gauge the overall lighting, and the transparency. Tested with both artificial and environment light, the pics below are with environment lighting only, results are the same with either, and also with other environments.

First two pics: density of 0.9, density of 5.0, rendered in 2.70a. These are what one might expect.

Next rendered in the Win64 build from builder, first the 0.9 density, then the 5.0 density. All else the same:

Finally rendered in the VC12 build from builder, 0.9 density, 5.0 density. No changes in the file at any time other than the density.

And the test file.f1.blend
(This is amore detailed version of a post on BA.)

Hi, I can confirm this issue in the build from yesterday, but Brecht pushed a fix a few hours ago, that seems to fix it.
https://developer.blender.org/rBcaed2394e222d8f7ae32d15be47ca848da7fef69

Can you please re-test with a new build? I only tested on Mac OS now, not sure why there is a difference between VC2008 and VC2013 build. :/

Confirming fixed in build be980b9. Now the outputs of the VC2008 and VC2013 builds match the 2.70a output. Build 064ef3f (Graphicall) still has the problem. (Just for reference.)
Thanks Thomas and Brecht! Now I can fire up and smoke away...
