Sculpt models take a long time to select on wire frame mode. #40234

Win 7 64 bit - The issue was there but not this much evident with Nvidia gtx580 and Nvidia 250 gts . But with my current Ati 6870 it is unworkable.

Broken: 2.70a also tested on 2e20c16 its like that on that version too.
Worked: Some noticeable lag on selecting with nvidia cards was always present with dense meshes (500k-1.2m), but it took 10-15 at worst, thought it had something to do with viewport performance issues. It became a problem when I installed an Ati card. It can take up to 2 min. to select a dense sculpt.

Dynatopo sculpts take too long to select on wire frame mode. If "VBO" is disabled then there is no lag, you can select instantly however solid view mode performance drops then. I found that this only occurs if the object has "Draw all edges" option disabled. If "Draw all edges" is enabled on all the dense models you can select instantly (with VBO's enabled).

Strangely when I subdivided a cube to 1.4 millon vertices and tried the selection it works. I dont know id its related to old files or models, but newly created models doesnt seem to be effected the same way.Need to test this though not sure.

I have file ready but it is big , It contains a partial dynatopo sculpt. Please use this dropbox link , I put it there instead of clustering github with big files, thanks.

There are known issues with selection and VBOs, esp. with amd cards…

Sergey, iirc, we consider this as known limitations/todo for a future new select system?

ok, I understand. like I said I have already found the work around for it. Just wanted to report it in case it was something else, a small lag 5-10 sec was evident with nvidia cards, I expected ati would have the same lag time not 2 min.

The workaround is this incase it got mixed on the report. select each of the sculpts/parts of dynatopo model on object mode and on solid view. (No lag this way). Then go to object properties and enable "Draw All Edges" option for each sculpt/part. This way you can select without lag on wire frame mode with VBO's enabled. You only have to do this once per blender file.

Checked the code, and can only conclude that drawing edges with VBO's & selection buffers happens to be slow.

Blender isnt doing anything bad, in this case it just happens to be drawing edges in smaller batches (edge array is split up a lot with this mesh).

Hint, Ctrl+RMB selects by object center if for some reason selection is slow.

when we move away from selection buffer this will likely not be a problem anymore.

Closing.
