System Information
Mavericks, i5, 16GB
Radeon 6770m

Blender Version
Broken: 2.71 official release
Worked: This was working up until RC2 hash#a19c1be

Short description of error
Being able to copy and paste assets from one running instance of Blender to another running instance makes Blender itself just about the best Material Library available to the industry. It makes the Append function just about obsolete. It's an absolutely fantastic feature. Everything(that I've tested) which is associated with a model will be copied over including Materials, textures and even armatures

This feature even works for transferring assets between 2.69 to 2.7 builds, it's really awesome.

I tested this on the 2.71 Windows release and it is still working there so I think that this is likely a mistake and not intentional.
The error message I receive shows up at the top status bar and says, "No Buffer to Paste from"

I posted a screen capture to help explain this, (in case this feature is accidental and nobody knows what I'm talking about.)

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Try to copy and paste objects with their associated materials, textures and armatures from Blender 2.71 to another running instance under OSX.
As I mentioned, it's still working for Windows. I've been telling people on BlenderArtists.org about this but no one has gotten back to me about whether or not this works for Linux.

This is likely because copy-paste doesn't use "public" temp folder.

kevindietrich: did you try this under Linux with versions previous to the 2.71 release?

Confirmed. I just noticed that it even copies over the object's Grease Pencil layers. Very well written code indeed.
