Cycles Bake: Setting small tile size results in wrong bake with 'stripes' rather than the expected noise pattern #41471

System Information
Operating system and graphics card: Microsoft Windows 7, 64 bit, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 Ti

Blender Version
Broken: 2.71 2014-08-17 07_50 Hash e85bcfa (self-compiled, MSVC 2013 64 bit, CMake)
Worked: 2.71 (official release)

Short description of error
When baking the combined pass with cycles, there is a pronounced stripe pattern that looks wrong. This is especially the case with large texture and small tile size, but as the attached sample file shows can already be seen with a 'reasonable' texture size of 1024x1024 and tile size of 64 pixels (which is the default preset)
The attached zip file also contains my resulted bakes for 64 pixel tile size and 1024 pixel tile size

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Steps to reproduce:

  • load attached simple .blend file, observe the tile size is set to 64 pixels for CPU render
  • bake the texture
  • observe the artifacts in the bake - looks like stripes.
  • set tile size to 1024 and bake again
  • observe that the artifacts have disappeared and now bake just shows the expected noise pattern

Based on a (as simple as possible) attached .blend file with minimum amount of steps

Did some additional research and compile:

rev. 2c5b6859d9 is good
rev 983cbafd18 shows the error

So, @dfelinto you were right with your suspicion about the revision causing this.
