Short description of error
cycles F12 render is very slow when viewport multi-sampling is set to 16
it had only rendered one tile in the time that it would take to render the whole scene without multi-sampling.
this might have something to do with video memory because it will take the same time to render with or without multi-sampling in a smaller scene.
here are some screenshots of gpu-z
AA off
AA on
as you can see the video memory is almost maxed out in both renders
Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
untitled2.blend
just render the scene with and without multi-sampling but this maybe specific to my gpu memory
sorry if this is just a hardware limitation but I thought that I should post this anyway because it renders perfectly without multi-sampling and uses
practically the same amount of video memory

i kept having huge performance drops when forcing aa with the nvidia control panel. but it only effected branched path tracing from what i could tell

This is not considered a bug - 16 FSAA is a very huge value, which already can slow usual 3DView and whole UI quite significantly, so if you add Cycles on top of it on the poor GPU…
ok thanks
is it possible to have it disable the AA when you pres F12?
although i suppose there is a reason that blender has to be restarted before AA takes effect
