System Information
Windows 8.1
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650

Blender Version
Broken: 2.72 95182d1
Worked: 2.71

Short description of error
It is sometimes impossible to select an object from most angles if it's intersected with other objects. You have to zoom in really close and enter wireframe mode to do the selection of an object. Sometimes even if a very small portion is covered by a different object it is impossible to do selection.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Enter camera view,
Try to select a cube object (named "SelectCube") by clicking in the area I painted with a grease pencil. closeObjectSelection.blend

Confirmed on Ubuntu 14.04 with NVidia 8800 GT - Driver version 331.38

There seem to be just a few dead areas, even inside the indicated region it would sometimes work and sometimes not.

Yeah, can confirm the issue here as well (linux64, GTX850M, drivers 340.32), with both selection methods (even the 'select menu' only shows two objects for me, always ignorig 'SelectCube' for some reason).

Antony, guess this is your area?

Note: checked with softwaregl, and still have the same result… So would seem it’s not a driver bug, this time ;)

I think this is the same issue, so I'll post this here instead of creating a new bug report.

Here's an example file showing how it makes selecting Bone "C" within the grease pencil mark very difficult:BadBoneSelection2.blend

I opened BadBoneSelection2.blend file and without changing the viewing angle I was able to select Bone "C" from the marked area, then I changed the view angle and the issue was back.

Yes, depending on small differences in resolution and viewing angle, the selection behavior differs slightly, but it is still very flaky compared to 2.71
