For some reason I can't select the model in the viewport. Each time I click on the mesh it selects either the lamp or the camera. I tried loading different scenes and even reloading Blender with the default cube doesn't help. The only way to select the mesh is in the outline.

Hi,
I can't reproduce this. In order to help fix your problem, someone will have to verify the problem. Are you saying that even on the default scene you cannot select the cube? Do you have custom user prefs? If you reset prefs to default do you still have the problem. What if you change the User Prefs->System->Selection setting to the different options? There was some fix for occlusion query selection recently but not sure it was in 2.72a.

There was indeed a fix for some selection error but it was after 2.72a.
@RikSavage Could you please try with a more recent version, like 2.72b ? Or one from the buildbot ?
okay I will give it a try and let you know the results

No news since one week…
Okay here is a link to a short video demonstrating the selection bug.

Did you try with a build that includes
d968a1ebb0
It fixed some selection issue and I don't think it's in either 2.72a or b so would need a recent compile or buildbot version.
not quite sure what d968a1ebb0...means or which version that is.
okay I just tried one of the daily builds and the issue remains in the same scene loaded. So naturally I did a clean bootup of blender and I even reset everthing to factory defaults. The selection issue is the same except when I place the lamp on a separate layer. If I hide the lamp layer then I have no trouble selecting the default cube, it works, but if both layers are visible then the selection toggles between the cube and the lamp
