Smoke simulation rendering issues when enable Render Transparent #42718

System Information
Ubuntu 14.04, NVIDIA GTX 680 x2
Intel Core i7-4930k

Blender Version
Broken: 2.72b 9e963ae
Worked: Unknown

When you have an emission shader on a volume and use an attribute node set to either "density" or "flame", when "transparent" is enabled in the render panel, it renders in the viewport but doesn't render in the render window. When you don't enable "transparent" it renders fine. Render device is set to CPU.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error // Blender file also offered
0. Select the Cycles renderer

  1. Set up a simple smoke simulation.
  2. Apply Material to domain with the Attribute node with value "density" fac plugging into an emission node strength, then the green node connecting to the volume on material output.
  3. Render in viewport, confirm fine, render in Render window, confirm fine.
  4. Enable "Transparent" in render settings.
  5. Render in Viewport, see fine.
  6. Render in Render window
  7. Cry :'(

Also tried on a version built from source today, bug still present.

This is just a visualization problem in the image editor of colors with zero alpha and color channels present in the image. To see such situations properly the image need to be alpha-overed on top of another one. but to do it seamlessly in the image editor would require re-considering some parts of color pipeline.

This is in my TODO for 2.73. So thanks for the report, but archiving it now.
