Short description of error
Mark Sharp information lost after Join with Objects that don't have enabled Auto Smooth.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  1. Add Mesh Cylinder, make Shading: Smooth
  2. Add Mesh Cylinder.001 (move it out of the way too), make Shading: Smooth
  3. The Cylinder.001, select one of the rings and Mark Sharp.
  4. The Cylinder.001, Properties Data, enable Auto Smooth (default 180 is fine)
  5. Select Cylinder.001 first, then select Cylinder second. Joining Ctrl+J loses the Sharp.

but

  1. Select Cylinder first, then select Cylinder.001 second. Joining Ctrl+J keeps the Sharp.

also

  1. The Cylinder, Properties Data, enable Auto Smooth.
  2. Joining Ctrl+J both Objects in any order keeps the Sharp.

it's obvious the Auto Smooth inherits its enabled or disabled state from the last Object selected before Joining, but should not discard the Mark Sharp information.

Sharp edges are not lost, they are just no more visible by default because the relevant draw option (Mesh Display panel in properties (N)) is disabled. Thanks for the report, but no bug at all here.
