BMP import issue / crash on Ubuntu, but not on OSX #45527

Closed
opened 2015-07-22 18:05:06 +02:00 by Allyson · 10 comments

System Information
Mac OSX Yosemite on NVidia GeForce 9400 w/ 256M
Ubuntu 15.04 64bit on same hardware (dual boot iMac 21.5 late 2009, 3.06Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo)

Blender Version
Works well: Mac: 2.75a c27589e

Broken: Ubuntu: 2.72 (whatever is in the main ubuntu repo)
Broken2: Ubuntu: 2.75-a~1436280969 latest from https://launchpad.net/~thomas-schiex/+archive/ubuntu/blender

Short description of error
I have blend that I created in the Mac side. When I open and then render it in the Ubuntu side (which I prefer, because Yosemite is so freaking slow) the render dies with:

IMB_ibimagefromMemory unknown file format

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
I am willing to upload the blend file and all its attachments... but its like a gig, and I think the issue is some sort of internal BMP the blend creates? Is that possible?

Anyway, tell me what more you need. Thanks

It would be best if you can take some time to remove anything from the Blend file thats not required to redo the crash.

On the other hand, if the crash only happens on a very large file, then you'll have to upload this to some ftp/online hosting.

Whatever the case, we can't redo the bug if we don't have a file to test with, marking as incomplete.

So... basically, keep pulling stuff out until it doesn't crash on render? I will try that this afternoon.

Yes, just a cut down file is fine.

Note that if no response/information is given to help redo the bug,
we typically close reports within a week.

It appears after a lot of testing that the problem was an append that had too many verticies. Not sure why Blender in Ubuntu would not handle as many as the same version in OSX on the same hardware. When I play with Blender in Ubuntu it handles faster in almost all respects, but it seems to only be able to handle 1/4 (maybe less) as many vertices as when I use OSX.

But... it appears that its not a bug, maybe configuration or something.
