The attached .blend file has two objects, object1 and object2. They both have identical mesh data.
The included script calls normal_split_custom_set() once on object1's mesh. The resulting normals are not correct. It calls normal_split_custom_set() twice on object2's mesh using the same normal data as for object1. The resulting normals are correct.

Your two meshes do not have identical data, since object2 has a sharp edge which is smooth in object1, setting normals on those objects cannot give same result… Once fixed, both looks identical to me.
Hi Bastien,
Just to make sure I didn't make a mistake, I downloaded the file I previously uploaded and made some screen shots.
You can clearly see in and there are no sharp edges in either mesh. This is the same file as I uploaded, before I run the script.
Then to further eliminate any variables I deleted object2, duplicated object1 and renamed the duplicate as object2 to make sure the mesh data is exactly the same then ran the script exactly once. You can see the result in and . Now each mesh has custom normals and sharp edges, but it's not the same.
Are you not able to replicate these results following these steps?

Woops… sorry, my bad, looks like something is not right here indeed.
