Cycles freezes computer after < 10 min of rendering #46739

System Information
AMD FX-8120 Eight-Core Processor 3.1 GHz
ATI Radeon HD 5450
Windows 7 ultimate, Service Pack 1

Blender Version
Broken: 2.76 e24ea81 (Same problem on earlier versions

I am trying to render my first animation. I am going to use three computers all with the same operating system and version of blender. The two older, slower computers work fine. When the faster AMD computer is used it renders for 5 to 10 minutes, then the screen freezes. The only option is to press and hold the power button until the power shuts off and start again.

If I am rendering a scene with low sample count the computer will render many of them before freezing. I attached a file with a sample count of 3,000. Usually it freezes the computer before completing. Today I tried it before I started writing this and it completed it the first time, but fails when I hit render again. I don't believe my computer has a supported GPU so I am using the CPU on all computers.

I have no way of knowing what is going on. It almost seems like it is time related, or maybe some buffer gets full. I attached a Blend that freezes the computer after one or two renders. I also attache the system-info file that Blender makes.

Thanks you for your help,
Larry

Pretty sure this isnt a cycles bug but more of a computer issue...Probably likely that the CPU is getting too hot, try monitoring the CPU temperatures using realtemp or coretemp or something like that and seeing if the CPU temperature is causing the fault.

None of the applications should ever be able to freeze computer even if it's their intention. So it's either something up to the operation system and/or hardware itself. Please monitor:

  • Memory consumption during rendering
  • Temperature sensors during rendering

Temperature is a great thought, and one I hadn't considered.

When rendering memory stays pretty consistent at 2.8 GB.
But CPU pegs at 100% for all eight cores.

I'll get some temperature monitoring software and see what is happening there.

You could also restrict cycles to use 3 threads or so and see if that helps.

I cannot thank all of you enough for the help you have given me here.
You were correct that my CPU was acting like a toaster oven.

I know to you it was simple advice, but I was completely stuck and you were tremendously helpful.
You are the reason why Blender is so great!

I will try your idea of restricting cycles to 3 threads to see if it gives better results, but here is what I did that solved the problem:

In Windows 7:

  • Went to Control Panel/Change power-saving setting
  • Clicked on "Change plan settings"
  • Clicked on "Change advanced power settings"
  • Clicked + by "Processor power management"
  • Clicked + by "Maximum processor state"
  • Changed the setting to 80%

After doing this the computer has been rendering for 24 hours without a problem and the temperature stayed around 42 deg. It is probably slower, but a quick calc tells me it is still 3 times faster than the two dual core computers I am also using for this project.

It is a little odd because if I look Windows Task Manager while rendering it says that all 8 cores are at 100%. I guess that is 100% of the 80% limit? It doesn't really matter - it works.

Thanks again,
Larry

Great that you found a workaround / solution, closing this report then as it's not a Cycles bug. :)
