Short description of error
Subsurf is very slow with 2 and 3 steps when I am in material mode in the viewport.
Object is simple but multimaterial.
Subsurf is fast in the solid mode, but if I making subsurf in solid and switch back to material view, I have long delay.
Also long delay between sculpt and object mode. Long delay with Undo, deleting vertex group from object etc.
The same is without UV-subdividing. The same with switching UV-subdivide option.
The same with duplicating this object. The same with opening file.
Here is the object

Talked briefly to @AlexanderRomanov in IRC, he offered his help helping here :)
I confirm the performance regression caused by
5abae51
and5494ea1
. Will investigate it tomorrow.Bad performance caused by tangent calculation needed for Normal Mapping. The "Normal Map" node had not been working at all till these two patches were commited. I have similar performance as before the patches if I mute the "Normal Map" in material shader.
I see slow performance for non-node material with normal mapping and similar mesh complexity before these patches.
Alexander, thanks for details.
So it is another one reason to keep strict workflow from modeling to texturing

This should be fixed by
5a0f397eaa
, latest builds from https://builder.blender.org/download/ should have faster normal map computation again (though obviously not as fast as no computation at all).
