Short description of error
Memory leak when exporting OpenEXR monochrome animation
Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
memleaktest.zip
See attached zip file, containing a simple .blend file and an empty "frames" directory (just a place to save the frames for convenience). At the command line render this .blend file animation, and observe the "Mem" value grow with each frame rendered. This issue can be recreated by creating a new file with factory settings, setting the output to OpenEXR monochrome ("BW"), and rendering the animation from the command line. Switching from BW to RGB or RGBA makes the memory leak go away, and switching to another output format (e.g. PNG) makes it go away as well.
Quick testing in the GUI (as opposed to rendering in the background at the command line) does not make this obvious, although I was rendering in the GUI when I discovered this problem (my days-long render of tens of thousands of simple frames died after just a few hours). On my larger file this fills up all my RAM (64 GB) on my other machine within about 2 hours before dying, requiring me to restart the batch rendering.
Following are the first and last excerpts from rendering out this file at the command line to demonstrate the memory usage growing:
