multilayerEXR_v01.blend
Windows 10 Home 64bit and GeForce GTX 980M
Broken: basically any version
Worked: (not known)
The compositor does not read layers/passes from Multilayer OpenEXR Files created outside of blender. I am not sure if this is considered a bug, but I guess it should work and I couldn't find any information otherwise.
To reproduce:
Open the attached blend (the OpenEXR file created with Vray 3.6 for Cinema 4D) and see compositor Input Image Node and the available passes/layers.
There are quite a few passes present in the file such as velocity, multimattes and others. Other tools such as krita, djv-imaging are able to display the layers and the attached frame is a background image from an interior car shot hence not all the IDs, Masks are present.

A colleague of mine, when further investigating the issue, wrote:
"Vray/Cinema 4D writes the full R G B channel name which means "AO.red, AO.green, AO.blue" but Blender seems to need "AO.r, AO.g, AO.b" instead."
And further notes:
"If I manually change channels in the EXR-Header that the colors end with 'r' 'g' and 'b' Blender is able to extract the channels but the outcome is still broken/messed up somehow.
There seems to be a problem with the connection between channels and image information."

The channel names used here don't follow the OpenEXR recommendations, but we can support them anyway.
