Spin/Lathe

    • {icon circle color=red} Should allow dragging to change amount
    • {icon circle color=yellow} We should add the new gizmo design
    • The gizmo should respect the Scene orientation
    • {icon circle color=yellow} Just like the transform gizmos, dragging anywhere performs a spin along the view (just like now), but dragging on the manipulator performs a spin on that axis
    • {icon circle color=yellow} Just like the transform gizmos, the manipulator should be visible immediately, not only after the initial spin operation.
    • The gizmo should respect the Scene Pivot Point. Currently it's hardcoded to always use the 3D Cursor as a pivot. It may often be useful to spin around Active Element, for example.

Updated Gizmo design, here:

When enabling the Spin tool, we present an option in the Tool Settings for the X, Y or Z axis.

1: Before executing the Spin tool, the user is presented with a widget like so:

Screen Shot 2018-09-20 at 00.50.24.png

This looks like the Extrude widget, but is curved, and shows a dotted line to the 3D Cursor, to indicate the center point.

When the user hovers over this line, we see the entire circle visualized, like so:

Screen Shot 2018-09-20 at 00.50.27.png

After the initial spin step, the user is then able to adjust the result using the gizmo, like so:

Screen Shot 2018-09-20 at 01.06.23.png

  • The Angle can be adjusted with the large disk.
  • The axis can be adjusted with the rotation handles.
  • The center can be adjusted using the arrows
  • To start a new spin operation, the user can use the + button, consistent with the Extrude tool, or select a different element.

I would like to see on the Todo:

  • doing a spin in an orthograpic view should activate the corresponding axis in the show tool settings,
the other axis should be invisible, cause they are not usable due you cant see the the circle for the axis for manipulate

  • the switches should be also available in the tool itself, specially for new users it is confusing that the switches for the axis are at an different place

I recently noticed that the Spin Tool is having some issues, especially in combination with some features that were added to Blender afterwards:

  • Dragging anywhere in the viewport will also execute the tool but this still needs to be tied to the "Drag Fallback Action" panel. The Spin Tool and Spin Duplicates Tool are the only ones that lack this feature inclusion even though it is necessary here.
  • When using the Gizmo on the Spin Duplicates Tool it will instead use the Spin operation without the "Use Duplicated" checkmark. This makes the Gizmo useless.
  • Ideally IMO the 2 Tools should be merged with more checkmarks provided in the Tool Settings like "Use Duplicates", "Auto Merge" and "Flip Normals".

If this task is still relevant it can be added and the tool can be improved further at some point.
