Cycles Compute Device only shows "none". #58524

System Information
Operating system: Manjaro Linux 18.0
Graphics card: Nvidia GTX 1070

Blender Version
Broken: 2.80, 8c620c8e2b

Cycles allows me to render with GPU, but under "Cycles compute device" in preferences the only option available is a blue highlighted "none", so I'm not sure if it's using my GPU or CPU.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Default startup file, check user preferences, system, general, Cycles compute device.

@brecht this looks like the same problem, but the graphics card is newer, so it should be supported?

Does it work in Blender 2.79?

Have you installed the proprietary NVIDIA graphics driver?

It works in 2.79 yes, and I have am using the proprietary NVIDIA Graphics Driver, using the command "glxinfo | grep OpenGL" it shows I am using "4.6.0 NVIDIA 410.78".

Well, indeed it seems it didn't work for me already in 2.79b:

Here's what my PC spits out when i type those fancy klingon phrases in a terminal as Zev did:

OpenGL vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation
OpenGL renderer string: GeForce GT 630/PCIe/SSE2
OpenGL core profile version string: 4.6.0 NVIDIA 390.77
OpenGL core profile shading language version string: 4.60 NVIDIA
OpenGL core profile context flags: (none)
OpenGL core profile profile mask: core profile
OpenGL core profile extensions:
OpenGL version string: 4.6.0 NVIDIA 390.77
OpenGL shading language version string: 4.60 NVIDIA
OpenGL context flags: (none)
OpenGL profile mask: (none)
OpenGL extensions:
OpenGL ES profile version string: OpenGL ES 3.2 NVIDIA 390.77
OpenGL ES profile shading language version string: OpenGL ES GLSL ES 3.20
OpenGL ES profile extensions:

But i should mention that i nearly constantly had an absent CUDA for the last years. I'm used to not being able to use it. Surely it will be my mistake, since i'm the only person i know who e.g. has a wacom but has no drivers for the software, so no butten management. Mint doesn't seem to be made for artists. I have a feeling that this is related somehow. Well, be it... :)

Zev, do you run Blender on a guest account with reduced privileges, as i do?

I only use one user account, so it has full permissions and privileges as far as I know.

One last note: when i use Eevee, i can clearly hear the fan of my graphic card, so at least something is going on there, right?

Mine doesn't make much of a difference, but I have a fairly quiet case so it's hard to tell.

Have the same issue on different environment:

Cycles Compute Device stetting does not show my graphic card in new Blender 2.8 beta but it works purfect it in Blender 2.79 (hash 5bd8ac9).

Blender 2.8 Beta (Branch blender2.8, hash 26d5a3625e)

OS Windows 10 running on the account with admin privilege (if it matters for windows)

GPU GeForce GT555M (driver version GeForce Game Ready driver v391.35 03/27/2018).

GT555M is an sm_21/fermi based card, for which support in cuda has been dropped.

@Papergami45, which version of 2.79 did you test? 2.79b, latest master build, .. ?

Can you attach the out of running blender from the command line like this?

./blender --debug-cycles > cycles_debug_log.txt

Actually this on is incomplete, we need the version info and debug output to try to understand what is happening here.

Closing due to bug tracker policy of missing info for 7 days, I can reopen if the information is provided.

I'm really sorry this took so long, I ran into a myriad of computer issues and had to reinstall my entire OS - annoyingly that hasn't seemed to fix the problem.
Last version of 2.7 I tested is the version currently on steam, hash f4dc9f9d68 - this version does pick up my GPU.

Running "blender-2.8 --debug-cycles gives me this:

blender-2.8 --debug-cycles
Read prefs: /home/zevcb/.config/blender/2.80/config/userpref.blend

Error: argument has no '.blend' file extension, not using as new file, exiting! /home/zevcb/./blender

If I try to put it into cycles_debug_log.txt it once again asks me to read my preferences, not sure what it wants me to do with them. This version of 2.8 is hash 74b3b81903. I made the package using "pamac build blender-2.8" if that makes a difference.
Apologies again for the really slow reply on this one.

wait, this is your own build? please try with prebuild blender from https://builder.blender.org/download/

Since this is your own build, I must have been built without CUDA support. How Manjaro Linux builds Blender is not something we control or support though.

from your system-info

		CU_DEVICE_ATTRIBUTE_COMPUTE_CAPABILITY_MAJOR 2
		CU_DEVICE_ATTRIBUTE_COMPUTE_CAPABILITY_MINOR 1

that's a compute 2.1 card, those are no longer supported.
