This works when the tool is set to Select, not Border Select.

This matches the 3D View, where lasso doesn't work when in the border select tool.

This is more a design issue, assigning to @brecht.

I'm sorry maybe I did not express myself well
When I want to cut a link in the empty space, I do not see the cut icon doing Ctrl + click, just select

Please read again what Campbell wrote. You will want to open the t-panel in the shader editor, click and drag the selection button in order to switch from box select mode to simple select mode. With box select mode you can't use the cut thingy that you refer to, as well as other things like dragging nodes from everywhere.

Indeed a debatable design decision, since in simple selection mode you already can box select by rightclick and drag.

When using the Box Select tool, Ctrl-drag we use for deselect, so the ctrl key is already occupied.

I'm not sure it's a good idea to sacrifice all those easy modifier keys for box select options though. Consistency is nice, but we also have to look at what is actually useful and efficient.

Also, the Cut tool and Annotation tool themselves don't allow for connecting nodes by the socket, or dragging nodes, forcing you to go back to box selection

Edit: Oh, now I see that the old way of selecting things is in the popup, guess it's a matter of changing the default tool then

@brecht In the Node Editor, we could make the select tool default, where we don't have this issue?

That would be much nicer than breaking the Box Select tool.

I'm sorry, I'm not sure if they understood me.

The keyboard shortcut worked in version 2.79 and 2.8 Alpha, since the Beta version stopped working

I refer to this shortcut:

Here's how you can fix it:

Open blender, change the biggest editor window (probably the 3D Viewport) into a Shader Editor. If not already done, open the toolbar by hitting the key "t" on your keyboard. You should see three buttons, and the one at the top is highlighted and says "Select Box". Leftclick on it for a second or longer, until the submenu expands. Change the setting from "Selection Box" to "Selection". Hit "t" again to close the toolbar again. Switch the editor type from "Shader Editor" back to what it was when you started Blender. At the top left corner of Blender there's a button called "File". Click on it and then on "Save Startup File".
Done.

We could simply make the Cut Links feature work using Ctrl + RMB - then it would not conflict with box selection.

But I could live with this too...

Just to let all know, node wrangler cut links keymap has tweak right by default. Which seems not to work and conflict with lazy connect and new cut tool altogether. Although changing it's (wrangler cut link) keymap to tweak left works.

Not sure if this is the appropriate place for node wrangler bug report though. This is quite obvious to me that users will use Node Wrangler quite often for it's versatility. Current state has disabled New Cut Tool and Wrangler Cut tool altogether.

Thanks.

I agree with @brecht, I think you shouldn't sacrifice an efficient way of working just to have a box select.

The original issue was solved, for node wrangler conflicts there is blender/blender-addons#65202 (Keymap conflict (Node Editor / Node Wrangler)).

Was this issue solved? I downloaded a build on July 6 (Hash 699193713f) and it's still working where you have to hit "T", select the cut tool, then cut, then go back to the Select tool. I agree with the original poster that the way it worked in 2.79 was much more efficient and useful.

When you say it was solved, was it basically just decided to leave it like this for now? Or maybe the UI freeze forced this to be locked as is?

I'd LOVE to see it adjusted to still use the 2.79 functionality while still conforming to all the stuff you all have established for 2.80.

Ctrl + RMB is cut links now, unless you are using node wrangler but that is being solved in blender/blender-addons#65202.

This still doesn’t seem to work on a mac (MacBook Pro + Mojave).

It used to be that CTRL + mouse drag would cut the connectors and SHIFT + mouse drag would add router on connectors. Is this no longer true in 2.80 ? I used this feature a lot in 2.79.
