Combing hair may lead to hair going inside the model, see attached picture. Happens after a while of combing, maybe depending on direction or brush size.

Please follow our submission template and guidelines, also read these tips about bug reports, and make a complete, valid bug report, with required info, precise description of the issue (only ONE issue per report!), precise steps to reproduce it, small and simple .blend and/or other files to do so if needed, etc.

And am not sure combing is supposed to prevent that, ever? Is 2.79 combing preventing that?

My report is correct I think, I am not including blend file as I do not want to make the mesh I am working on public. The issue should not be dramatically difficult to reproduce ;)

I am not sure with 2.79 as I am using combing with 2.8 only. But this is clearly a bug as hair should not go inside the model, as this creates areas without hair.

@ilio It takes a lot of developer time to go over bug reports to try and reproduce them.
For that reason, it would be helpful if you can start from a new file, with a cube mesh and setup the hair in a way that the problem is visible.
Doing this with both 2.80 and 2.79 and providing the file would be helpful for this case.

I have added a blend file showing the problem. Please note that I used an open mesh here but the same problem can be found with a closed mesh. when it is closed and the hair are inside the model, it is not obvious to make them go outside, actually I didn't find a way (is there any?)

I can not find the .blend file that you say you have shared.

Just in case, you control your Deflect Emitter and Distance settings in Top Bar
I can not reproduce your problem. Anyway, the problem you have mentioned in your two reports usually occurs when you have not correctly applied scale in your model. In Object mode select the emitter, Ctrl+A and Apply Scale. Free Edit in particles Tab and try again.

@YAFU : attachment was in but link at the beginning of text, I just put it at the end now.

I have checked the behavior with 2.79 and there too the hair can go inside the model, which makes combing on certain surfaces such as thin ones (like a tail) very difficult. I will check with the settings you mentioned.

About #58634, indeed I didn't apply the scale change, but now I applied it and still have the same issue, hair in Particle Edit mode are longer than in Object mode, I will update the ticket.

You have Deflect Emitter disabled in that file. Enable it and configure Distance.

Ok, well where did this go in 2.8? There is a Deflection section in the emitter settings with Size Deflect but this is not it apparently (has no effect on the problem). And in Particle Edit I cannot find Distance nor deflection setting...

As I mentioned, Top Bar while you are in Particle Edit mode. Also in the first tab of Properties Editor.

Oh ok, works fine now! So not a bug here, however as part of the effort to make 2.8 more user friendly, why not enabling deflection by default for hair emitters, because who wants their hair to go inside the mesh by default?

This is enabled by default here, you try with a new scene. You must have disabled it accidentally or while you were experimenting.

Indeed, it is on by default, I must have disabled it... Not a bug then, thanks! ticket can be closed.
