Mac OS 10.13.5
Graphics card:

Blender Version
2.80 Beta Dec 04 00:11:18 1b6a394d86

*When left select is set in preferences, the loop select does not work with the left mouse button. When right select is set in preferences it does work with the right button on the mouse. I would prefer the left select in preferences as this then conforms with all other operations on the Mac

Cannot reproduce.
ALT + left working fine here to select edge loops.

Is this possibly taken as a OS shortcut on MAC?

I can not reproduce this either, would you try with a recent build of blender and see if this still happens for you?

Hi Phiippo
After your reply, I tried to reproduce what you said and still had the same problem, so spent the next two days upgrading my operating system and a new Blender. Still had the same problem, then noticed that I had the “emulate 3 button mouse” ticked in Blender preferences. Unticked that and it now works perfectly as you said,

Thank you - Peter

Good news actually: see #60497 [which has just been fixed by bb70594c1b]

I have this issue on a Mac. Deselecting 'Emulate three button mouse' does make loop select work but now I can no longer use Option+Mouse to pan around. I can use the widget in the upper right corner, but it would be nice if it worked like 2.79
