Short description of error
Smoke is visible in viewport but not in render.
Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Replay
(step added to be reproducible in mantaflow)Manually setting it up gives the same result.

Can confirm cycles needs cache baking prior to rendering atm. (this wasnt the case previously?)
Eevee will render the volumes though (just needs
Volumetric
to be enabled in the Render tab)Smoke is not exported to renderto Cycles smoke is not exported to render without bakingIt was not like that before 2.8, if you had just played through the timeline so it had a smoke frame in memory it would render what was currently in memory (ie current frame if you had played the scene from the simulation start to where you are, or the last simulated scene if you stopped your playback and clicked around the timeline - until you clicked the simulation start frame where it would become empty again).

i seem to be having the same issue w/ a fire scene in an animation, i have built it from scratch, not using Quick Smoke. i've run the animation, the Viewport looks pretty different to the version in 2.79, when i F12 i get no fire, and it one scene it appeared that the domain was blocking some of the normal render effects.

Funny thing, I had this working... accidentally deleted my box and couldn't get it to work again for a while.
You probably won't believe what I did to get it to work:
Select the Smoke Domain box, while in object mode, CTRL-A, all transforms. Renders in Cycles now. (still doesn't in Eevee, but I'm not using Eevee, so I'm not gonna mess with it.)
No baking required.
Note:
Blender 2.81
Using default "quick smoke" and only altering the prepopulated density setting to 250 to create "steam".
Not density under the object's smoke property, NOR the density under the smoke domain's smoke property, the density under the smoke domain's material settings is the one I changed

I can confirm with the current simulation system (Mataflow) and corresponding cache system without bake (
Replay
in cache settings). The worst thing is that with this type of cache you don't have an option to bake, so you won't be able to render.
I'm not sure what you mean by having no option to bake, baking and rendering smoke simulations with mantaflow seems to work?
I refer to the cache as
"Replay"
.
