enabling overlay "vertex group weights" in edit mode results in crash #59578

Operating system: win10_64bit
Graphics card: gtx 1050ti

Blender Version
Broken: blender 2.8, 2018-12-18, 9f25dad0a9

Short description of error
enabling the overlay "vertex group weights" closes blender immediately in the file attached.
Characters.blend

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  1. open the attached .blend, it is already in edit mode, the mesh has already been parented to the rig.
  2. Overlays -> enable "vetex group weights" under mesh edit mode

it should close immediately.Characters.blend

there is also another weird 'armature edit mode' behavior that is limited to this file only where transforming a bone (by any means, either draging its head or rotating it) also rolls the bone aswell.

okay so built the latest blender just now it allows me to enable it, but it doesn't show anything

also i think it is related to this, enabling 'hidden wire' just above the "vertex group weights" option also results in a crash.

alright another update: again using the latest blender build as of the date of typing this comment.
disabling subsurface modifier seems to get rid of the black, now the weights show as intended.
