System Information
Operating system: Windows 10
Graphics card: Nvidia GTX 1060 6GB

Blender Version
Broken: 2.8 any build
Hey there, I'm not a programmer so I don't know what is going on, but I keep getting this issue where I'll be using blender 2.8 for about half a minute, then it freezes, stops working, then crashes. After I try to re-open blender 2.8 I get this error:

Read prefs: C:\Users\Jon W\AppData\Roaming\Blender Foundation\Blender\2.80\config\userpref.blend

Win32 Error# (3221684230):

Blender requires a graphics driver with at least OpenGL 3.3 support. This program will now close.

Then I try to switch to stable release of Blender 2.79 and I get a different crash when trying to open the program. It reads:

Your system does not use 3D hardware acceleration. Blender requires a graphics driver with OpenGL 2.1 support.

This may be caused by:
*A missing or faulty graphics driver installation. Blender needs a graphics card driver to work correctly.

  • Accessing Blender through a remote connection.
*Using Blender through a virtual machine.

This program will now close.
And in the command prompt it reads:

Read prefs: C:\Users\Jon W\AppData\Roaming\Blender Foundation\Blender\2.79\config\userpref.blend
Warning! Using result of ChoosePixelFormat.
Warning! Using result of ChoosePixelFormat.
Warning! Legacy WGL is unable to select between OpenGL versions.

I have no idea what is going on here other than this, sorry.

Additional info:

I can restart the computer then it works again, but only for about half a minute then it crashes again. I've reinstalled the latest graphics driver
Version 417.35 which should have openGL 3.3 support.

Not sure what else to add.

Anybody know whats going on?

Thanks

If I had a wild guess, I think that your GPU driver crashes and windows loads the "fail safe" drivers to recover. These fail safe drivers do not have the required opengl support to load blender.

You could try updating windows (if there are any updates) and also perhaps downgrade you drivers and see if that helps.
Report back your results.

I am experiencing this too. I'd been working on project all evening. Blender then crashed after that as soon as I open the project I get that exact same error.
I also upgraded the NVIDIA drivers just in case. But OpenGL 3.3 is pretty old so I already had the idea that this wouldn't solve the issue.

My workaround is to start NVIDIA control panel. Add the blender.exe executable that causes the error and add it to the Manage 3D Settings list.
Since I have 2 GTX680 GPUs in SLI, I found that setting GPU 1 of 2 solves the issue.

I can confirm this works. I still experience the occasional slowdown-to-a-halt but it has always been able to pick up again after a minute or two. I can also run blender more than once per Windows reboot. (I've got the same specs as OP)

So this seems to be a SLI issue. @fclem is there anything we can do here?

Oh I'm sorry, my bad. I didn't set GPU 1 of 2, I set to always use the NVIDIA 1060 (I've got only one) instead of auto-select, which solved the issue. So no SLI going on (I think).

Can confirm this workaround.

Windows 10 (1809)
nVIDIA GTX 1080Ti (2 cards but not in SLI)
Blender 2.8 (blender-2.80-bfef3bce1a93-win64)

I tried to update the driver, set graphics card 1 of 2 and downloaded OpenLG 3.3. All not work
Then I banned another graphics card, now blender can be used..
