First of all ,this is specifically about the "texture node editor set to brush for creating an image , then using the created image as an image input in the (brush ) node editor , and again paiting in the SAME image ...
It totally makes sens that blender crashes because it is trying to create an image where the brush is that image itself , thus creating a feedback loop
Steps to reproduce crash
Crash
In the provided file , everything is already set up , al you have to do is paint in the image editor , and then route the module labeled çrash'to the output of the texture node editor feedback crash .blend

On the other hand , doing the exact same thing but without using the''texture node editor , using the image '' in proces'' as a brush, does not result in crashing
Just checked in blender 2.79 , no crashing
Also in order to reproduce the bug , one doesn't need to assign a material at all

It doesn't crash for me, but I do get artifacts on the texture (which is not unexpected). And I get long freezes.
@brecht I'm guessing we do not what this to happen in the first place (painting onto a texture that you are using as a brush at the same time).

It should be enough to just "connect canvas to brush" in texture node editor, But I managed to get crash only when I modified Layout workspace. In Shading workspace I got no crash.
