System Information
Operating system: Windows 10
Graphics card: NVidia GTX 960m

Blender Version
Broken: example: 2.80, git.4ef09cf937f2, blender2.8, 2019-2-2

As described by the tool tip, holding shift should measure thickness. But whether clicked or not, thickness is never measured.

Steps to reproduce:
Be sure left-mouse select is enabled.
Default scene
Click the measure tool
Shift-click on the side of the cube.

We could change behavior, but this isn't a bug. Edited tooltip. a6f045de3f

I encourage you to reconsider simply writing out this functionality. It was a core function of the tool in 2.79 and very useful for analyzing imported meshes.

This is how it works:

  • Ctrl while dragging to snap
  • Shift while dragging to measure surface thickness.

Confirmed that for existing rulers, you can grab an endpoint of them and create this behavior. This is a departure from 2.79 behavior which, in this case, might be considered more intuitive.

Recommend either implementing the creation of a new measuring tool on a shift+click (2.79 behavior), creating a measuring tool object in the default scene located at 1,0,0 to -1,0,0 to avoid future confusion.

The tool could be made more obvious by adding tool settings to switch between distances and thicknesses. That sounds like a good improvement.

@ideasman42: something to keep in mind when you go back to working on the tools?

This would be nice to expose in the UI, added task #69660 (Measure tool thickness option exposed in the UI)
