System Information
Operating system: Windows 10.0.17763
Graphics card: GTX 1080ti

Blender Version
Broken: 2.80 RC3

Short description of error
Hello,

I've noticed that the a cached smoked simulation is deleted when we hide the smoke domain (or hide the collection it is in) or hide it only in the viewport (using the visibility button in the simulation tab). This is quite frustrating when working with large simulation that take a couple of days to calculate.

Also, it would be great to be able to pause or cancel the simulation at any point.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Bake a smoke simulation. Hide it, and then show it again. The baked file will have been deleted.

You forgot to upload a simplest possible .blend file to reproduce this issue

bake can be stopped with ESC-key and cached baked data can be used to continue baking of simulation

Next time you can use Help > Report a Bug item and striclty follow this form. Attach a simplest possible .blend file, before you made a bugreport you must search if bug/issue is already reported from others users

Hi sorry for the lack of .blend file. Here is one:
SmokeDomainBug.blend

As I didn't know that I could stop the simulation with the ESC-key, I instead used the "Update All To Frame" button. It is only when using this button to bake and then hiding-showing the smoke domain that the deleting occurs.

Corrected steps for others to reproduce the error
With provided .blend file

  • Select a random frame in the Timeline
  • Bake the smoke simulation using the "Update All To Frame" button
  • Hide the smoke domain either in the collection view, or only the smoke shown in the viewport using the button in the physics tab
  • Unhide the smoke domain -> the baked file are deleted at this point
