Blender Version
2.8 release

Short description of error
Key Map Editor entry "un-expand upon change" behavior

Update: A better description may be "Resets entry list display to its original expand/fold state"

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Will be tricky to reproduce.

  1. Get to keymap editor, find "Box Select" under view3d.

  2. Expand its setting, see the sub-category "Gesture Box"

  3. Enable/Disable entries under "Gesture Box"

  4. Notice the whole entry for "Box Select" folds up.

  5. If nothing un-expands and things seem to be normal, repeat from step 1 on something else.

Update: A weird fix for this trouble is to toggle enable for the "Box Select" entry when it is expanded. Don't know why it fixes the issue. If toggled again when it is folded, the problem comes back.

I did some testing on a fresh build of 2.82 and there's more to this than initially meets the eye. A better description might be (De)activating a gesture key map collapses the parent key map section.

The problem appears to stem from the fact that the gesture key maps appear twice - in the given example, the gestures for box select appear firstly under 3D View > 3D View (Global) > Box Select > Gesture Box and secondly under Gesture Box directly. When you expand or collapse either of the instances of the Gesture Box section, the other one follows suit, not sure if that's intentional.

When a gesture is activated or deactivated from either of the instances of the Gesture Box section, the Box Select item (parent of the first Gesture Box section) is collapsed, which is the reported bug.

Having deactivated a gesture it can be reactivated via the tick box, the Restore key map item button next to the deactivated key map, or the Restore key map(s) button at the top of the section; and all of these exhibit the same collapsing behaviour. The Restore key map item button doesn't actually reactivate the gesture (subject of a second bug report perhaps?), but it does still trigger the collapsing behaviour.

The work-around provided does not just apply to the de(activate) checkbox, but interacting with any of the UI elements when Box Select is expanded stops it from being collapsed and interacting with any of the UI elements when it is collapsed reactivates the behaviour.

I am not sure how this issue can be connected to locked Fill checkboxes of Vertices Rip shortcuts.
