Box Select does not update properties #69510

Short description of error
When selecting one an object with box select the properties does not update, even if only one object was selected.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  1. Select one object by clicking it
  2. Select other object by box selecting it - >properties does not update

This is because box selection doesnt set objects active.
This has always been the case, so pretty sure this would not be considered a bug.

Note there have been similar reports:
#68647 (objects selected using box select cannot be moved to collection if there is no active object)
#68975 (lack of active object after using selection tools blocks menus)
And I guess (at least for operators), we are slowly transitioning to not rely on an active object.
For the Properties Editor, we need an active object though.

Not sure if this has been discussed before, but the only other alternative would be to set an [arbitrary really] object active from the box selection [probably a no-go, could be considered if only a single object is selected?]

Maybe one day the design of active vs. selected objects will be changed, but this is not a bug.
