Simple deform modifier - bend seems broken 2.80, 2.81 #69900

System Information
Operating system: Win 10

Blender Version
Broken: 2.80 release, 2.81 e2df789c48
Worked: Probably, never (Not since the axis selection was implemented)

The simple deform modifier bends an object around an absolutely arbitrary point in space.

  1. Subdivide the default cube a bunch of times, scale it up by X in edit mode.
  2. Add Simple deform modifier, set mode to bend, angle to 45, axis to Z. Look at the expected behavior, remember it well.
  3. Change axis to Y. Look at the unexpected behavior.

(The red outline is what I would expect it to do)

It looks like the problem is that the object doesn't bend around it's origin, but around some arbitrary point in space.
The problem persists when trying to bend an object around another object using the offset origin option. The result is absolutely unpredictable.

It does get more confusing the more you play with it. Seems it works if you keep your cube vertical.

X

Or rotating cube in object mode first you get this.

I strongly disagree with the opinion that the modifier is not broken, just not intuitive. It is clearly broken or badly designed and needs fixing. Multiple reports regarding this modifier have been closed already with no solution given, but people keep reporting it. Sending people to Rightclickselect is not a solution because that's where great ideas come to be discussed a little and forgotten forever.

In case anyone stumbles upon this report, after a lot of headache I discovered a workaround: to make it work properly you have to rotate the origin of the object in accordance with the axis selected. This wasn't even an option until very recently.

The actual solution proposal: It should be possible to select two axes, the one to bend the object around and the one to bend the object along. So, in my example the object is bent around the Y axis and along the X axis, while I need it to bend along the Z axis. I think this should be an option in the modifier.

A practical workaround is to create an empty and to rotate it until the desirable effect is achieved, but it's just a crutch, it shouldn't be like this.

Hi! i'm completely new and newbie regard Blender, i encountered this error and i thought i was doing something wrong... is there a way to report this to the developers? i think the bend modifier is a lot important.
