Mode switches for Transform Sculpt Tools #69932

System Information
Operating system: Windows 10
Graphics card: NVidia

Blender Version
Broken: Blender 2.81 Alpha , b043bef000 Windows 64 bit

Short description of error
When using the transform tools (e.g. Move, Transform... in sculpt mode to select a different object, the mode changes to object mode, because the mode is defined for the object - but perhaps for the transform tools in sculpt mode the mode should stay as is.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  • Create new project
  • add a new object in object mode (e.g. cube)
  • Switch to sculpt mode
  • Select the move or transform tool
  • Select a different object
  • Mode is changed to object mode, which is understandable, but not what the user expects or wants. When using the transform in sculpt mode I guess the user wants to stay in this mode.

Please dont change the Project Tag specific to a blender version yourself, this will be done by developers if appropriate, thx.

Besides that I cannot reproduce (or misunderstand)...
If I want to objects both selectable for sculptmode, I can turn off Edit > Lock Object Modes and enter sculptmode on both of them
If I then switch selection from one to the other, I dont see any modeswitches happen.

@Jayanam : is that what you meant?

@lichtwerk : No, what I meant is, that when Edit -> Lock Object Modes is disabled, you can change the selected object now in sculpt mode by selecting it with the mouse cursor. Then the mode switches to object mode (if the object that you select was created in object mode or the last mode of the object was object mode). When Lock Object Modes is enabled, you cant select a different object at all.

I guess the transform tools are made available in sculpt mode so that you dont have to switch the modes for transforming object when you are in sculpt mode. So wouldnt it be consequent to let the user change the selected object by clicking onto it in the scene in sculpt mode, the transform tool (gizmo) is used then for this object but we stay in sculpt mode.

The transform tools in sculpt mode do not transform objects as if in object mode, they transform the vertices instead of the object, and can work on a subset of the mesh. It's like the transform tools in edit mode.

In any case, this kind of user feedback is outside the scope of the bug tracker.
