System Information
Operating system: linux
Graphics card: nVidia 1070 GTX

Blender Version
Broken: 2.81 master 28eee0f97c33b
Worked: (optional)

Short description of error
Soft shadow samples for area lights are displayed in the viewport, but when rendering with View->Viewport Render Image or Animation the shadows are rendered as hard shadows.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Based on the default startup or an attached .blend file (as simple as possible).

Open attached blend file, notice that in the viewport the shadows are displayed as soft shadows.
Use View- > Viewport Render Image.
In the rendered image the shadow has hard edges.

Looking at this further, it seems to also affect point and spot lights too.
Sunlight is not affected.

in 2.80 alpha it worked fine, and EEVEE with soft shadows in viewport renderer was a game changer like twinmotion but in blender. Now when rendering blender exports every frame - like in cycles. But with viewport renderer like in 2.80 alpha we could save up to 2 mins per frame, because in such case blender did not export scene every frame. and now we have to wait for cycles-like export. That's sad.

This issue is still present in 2.82 alpha (21.12.2019 build). The viewport render image feature is quite terrible/unusable because of this bug and need higher priority for fix in my opinion.

Below image is viewport screenshot, above is "viewport rendered image".

Agreed. Now I am not unlucky enough to have my scene completely unusable because of this issue, but it would certainly help to get this issue fixed. Tried both the daily 2.82 Alpha and the latest stable 2.81.

Yep me too. This is causing me a big problem at render time. 20-40s multilayer renders in command line, 2 or 3 seconds viewport, but shadows not rendering nicely from there, despite displaying perfectly fine in the viewport. Help!

OSX 10.13.6 NVidia Titan X
