System Information
Operating system: Windos 10-10.0.18362 64 bit
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960 driver version 436.48

Blender Version
Broken: 2.81

Short description of error
Hi,

Somehow if i start blender i can't rotate the view with the middle mouse button nor with the icon on the top right.

If i load an old blend file (only have projects from 2.80) it works again, and if i start a new file it also works again. It doesn't work if i start blender 2.81 and immediately reate a new file.

it also works perfectly fine with blender 2.80

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
I'm not sure, but i think the bug appeared after i switched on the Tool Settings in the header and saved the startup file.

I follow your steps but it works fine for me. We will need more exact steps to reproduce your error.

If you load factory settings and then change your defaults and save startup file again does it go away?

Operating system: Linux-5.3.0-20-generic-x86_64-with-Ubuntu-18.04-bionic 64 Bits
Graphics card: GeForce GTX 1080/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 440.26

Edit2: I think I just found the "solution"/problem. Please check the following setting: Preferences>Navigation>Orbit&Pan>Orbit Sensitivity
See if the value is set at 0. If yes, bump it up to desired value [test it]

I do not remember adjusting this value or even using this tab in Preferences but lets leave that as benefit of the doubt. If the same problem appears again, I will check this value first and then test it out until I find the source.

Hope it helps!
Cheers

I got the same issue and results [if I load the factory settings > Save > restart Blender]

Some notes:

  • Yesterday it was working fine throughout the whole day. I was closing and opening blender on multiple occasions
  • Yesterday is the first time I used my Wacom tablet to sculpt in Blender. Along the way, I had to enable the Input > Emulate 3 Button Mouse [ Alt + LMB to rotate ] so that I could rotate my view with the pen
  • I also had to restart the tablet driver/service to refresh it and cancel its behavior as a regular mouse [no pressure sensitivity] as well as enable/disable gpedit.msc PenFeedback to get rid of little info bubbles when you hold Alt/Ctrl etc..
  • One more noticeable thing I tried to use is new Denoise for composting but sadly my CPU does not support it
  • I am not sure if I switched on/off Content/Tool toggle.. could be, because I do remember setting up various things for my StartUp file [example - Camera/ View > Clip Start distance to lower value]. I will experiment with this one
  • Lastly, I did uninstall 2.80 yesterday but I can not remember if I ran 2.81 after that [to notice the issue with rotation]

Not sure if any of these things could make this scenario happen.. but there it is

The switch with 2.80 files did work [could rotate in it] but the moment I saved the file [in 2.81] I couldn't rotate the next time I opened it

Edit: New user, got introduced to blender with 2.80 version

Well if Orbit Sensitivity somehow gets set to 0 then that would for sure cause issue, but it should be almost impossible.
You can't set it to 0 in interface because RNA has a min. Could be something in versioning code. Still could use .blend file or exact steps to reproduce.

I see the settings were added in e82b7f15 by @ideasman42 so assigning to him, maybe he has idea what it could be.

Thanks for the tip :)

My orbit sensitivity was also set to 0. I also never touched this value.

i changed the value to 0.4 and now if i save the startup file > restart blender it's fixed and i can rotate normally.

before the issue appeared i was just playing around with some of the new features like the denoising node, some sculpting tools and both new remesh options. i can't remember anything else and i didn't do anything fancy yet and haven't saved any blend file for 2.81.

Interesting, you messed with similar things as I did. Who knows, maybe there is something..

One more thing I just remembered. After this issue came up, I've noticed that my Ctrl + S keymap for save changed to actually having a pop-up/menu instead of being directly overwritten
Not sure if relevant, but there you go

I assume this should be fixed by blender/blender-staging@8cb55f8d16
Please try a fresh build [todays or tomorrows].

Will close as resolved, if this still isnt fixed in fresh builds, please make sure to comment again and we can repopen...
