System Information
Operating system: Ubuntu 19.10
Graphics card: GeForce GTX 460

Blender Version
Broken: 2.83 (sub 0), branch: master, commit date: 2020-01-17 19:09, hash: 1f92e9903f, type: Release
build date: 2020-01-18, 00:02:53

Short description of error
When both X-Ray and Armature "In Front¨ display are enabled in Pose mode, bones cannot be selected by Right clicking on them or by using Select Box.
They can only be selected with Select Circle or Select Lasso.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Default startup

  1. Add an Armature
  2. Enable X-Ray
  3. Switch to Pose mode
  4. Enable "In Front" in Object Data Properties > Viewport Display
  5. Disable X-Ray
  6. The bone cannot be selected
(*) X-Ray button does not change visual state when switching X-Ray state, and it is still enabled when you exit Pose mode.

Another sequence:

  1. Enable In Front in Armature
  2. Switch to Pose mode
  3. Enable X-Ray
  4. The bone cannot be selected

Pre-selecting a bone:

  1. Enable In Front
  2. Switch to Pose mode
  3. Select the bone
  4. Enable X-Ray (The bone is still active and can be transformed)
  5. Deselect the bone with ALT A or click anywhere else but the bone (Notice Right clicking on the bone, which would normally keep it selected, deselects it now)
  6. The bone cannot be selected
(*) Please also note when you exit Pose mode, X-Ray view has not been enabled.

If both X-ray and In-Front are selected before switching to Pose mode, the bones can be selected, but as soon as you disable X-ray they become unresponsive.

Thank you

Thanks for the report and the detailed steps. There is something wrong here. Part of it is could be the new overlay engine, but some parts is just weird. I wasn't able to turn off the xray mode anymore. Will dive deeper into this
