Worked: (newest version of Blender that worked as expected)

Short description of error
Changing outputs from Separate RGB node into Displacement (using microdisplacement) does not trigger geometry update. Have to tab into edit mode to force mesh update.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Add plane with microdisplacement enabled.
Connect Image node to Separate RGB node and one of the channels into Displacement node.
Change view to Rendered mode.
Change channels from R to G to B to R and notice no geometry updates happen in the view port. (Make sure to use an image with different channels)

Please prepare a simple .blend file that we can test this with. Do you have to use an image, or does it work with procedural noise as well?
