Short description of error
crash rendering animation with persistent images

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Hi,

I am unsure if this is the way to go about it, I am seeing the issue with FULL Official Release of 2.83, and 2.90 Alpha

I am having the issue discussed in Fix #75715, blender just exits without warning when rendering animations with persistant images enabled,
when disabled it's fine, renders all frames no worries.

The problem occurs more often should you use a blend file with large textures, and large environment images..
Such as the Demo Blend file found here,
https://cloud.blender.org/p/gallery/5dd6d7044441651fa3decb56
Only changes I make are set render tiles to 16x16, and render as animation, after 15 or so frames it crashes to desktop without warning
divide the 3D view space into 2 side by side, and set the right to material shading.
Renders happen in the left 3d view window of the two that were divided
EDIT: also enable persistent images :)

I notice that when Persistent Images is enabled Blender at bottom right / system memory spikes and basically almost doubles and ram keeps increasing until the crash occurs,
the ram usage doesn't seem to have a connection here, as it can be at near full utilization of 32GB and sometimes it occurs when 17GB is utilized.
it's very random, but the disable of this setting adds upto 10 seconds of the average scene per frame to render.

Seems to be a duplicate of #77734 that has an uncommitted fix. Until a new version is released the rendering should work without GUI .

It takes too much time to confirm this and likelyhood is high so I will merge these reports. If after fix issue still persists, please submit message, so we can reopen.

Hi Richard. And Vincent..

Is there any idea about the fix?
You mention to try without cli, running in cli is alot slower sadly.

The fix. Is it going to be part of 2.9x?

Unfortunately there was an issue #76767 with slow CLI rendering on Windows due to the slow unbuffered console output. That issue is currently fixed and should be in the daily builds . Another way to speed up CLI rendering is to redirect the output to null (or a file) blender.exe -b "YOUR_FILE.blend" -a > nul. This way it should be the fastest way to render (see the issue comments for performance comparison).

As for in which version this crash will be fixed, I can't tell as I'm not a Blender developer. Probably it will be fixed in 2.90 and 2.83. Someone should do the commit, and then it will be available in the daily builds and later releases. If it were for me to decide, I would've made it a high priority. As in my experience it happens quite often, and I've noticed a few suspiciously similar complaints about the animation rendering crashes in the bug tracker. Until then we should wait and try not to bother the overburdened developers too much.

Okay.

Vincent. Can I ask.. is it possible to use GPU for cli rendering.
I have searched and searched and I don't see any options.

I've saved my blend file as GPU rendering in GUI but when ever it uses cli I notice you activity is always 0

Thanks for replying too

Can I also ask is 2.83 suppose to be long term support LTS
Will it get daily updates? Or only 2.9
