I didn't understand this step:
But I can confirm that the render image does not appear automatically inside the node after it is rendered.
i don't know if that part belongs in the bug report, but:
From the label 'Auto render' i expected that turning this on would force a render to be calculated if there wasn't one currently available to display in the nodes that required one (as well as rendering again anytime the scene changed). But it doesn't seem to behave this way. Opening the file and turning auto-render on doesn't seem to trigger a render to be started.
This appears to be a different bug.
Only one bug per report is allowed (unless they are closely related).

possibly related. @info-27, is this the first time you tried to use this feature, or did it work before and now it doesn’t?@EAW yes, this is my first time using the compositor.
A simpler example. With this setup in the compositor the viewer node doesn't display the colour.

Auto-render only works on scene edits.
The code explicitly avoids any compositing operations after file open, because otherwise opening production files will cause unavoidable slowdown upon open.
There is a fix for preview of color input proposed in D8263.
