Short description of error
In compositor image previews inside nodes don't update/refresh when they should

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  • Open the attached .blend file
  • No renders or previews show up in the compositor panel despite Auto Render being turned on, I expected this option to trigger a render if one doesn't yet exist.
  • Press f12 to render.
  • Back in the compositor panel, the backdrop image now shows, but there are no preview images inside the nodes - I expected there to be at this point.
  • Clicking the material icon on the Render Layers node causes the previews to appear in the other two nodes. Clicking a second time expands the Render Layers node showing the image preview there too.

I didn't understand this step:

No renders or previews show up in the compositor panel despite Auto Render being turned on, I expected this option to trigger a render if one doesn't yet exist.

But I can confirm that the render image does not appear automatically inside the node after it is rendered.

i don't know if that part belongs in the bug report, but:

From the label 'Auto render' i expected that turning this on would force a render to be calculated if there wasn't one currently available to display in the nodes that required one (as well as rendering again anytime the scene changed). But it doesn't seem to behave this way. Opening the file and turning auto-render on doesn't seem to trigger a render to be started.

Auto-render only works on scene edits.
The code explicitly avoids any compositing operations after file open, because otherwise opening production files will cause unavoidable slowdown upon open.

There is a fix for preview of color input proposed in D8263.
