Unable to render AOVs with Open Shading Language activated #79942

opened 2020-08-20 09:24:00 +02:00 by Felix Voigt · 7 comments

System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.18362-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: GeForce GTX 1060 6GB/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 452.06

Blender Version
Broken: version: 2.83.5, branch: master, commit date: 2020-08-19 06:07, hash: c2b144df39
Worked: Broken since at least 2.82.

Short description of error
When setting the Render Properties to Cycles; Supporrted, CPU, AOVs can be rendered completely normal.
But when activating Open Shading Language, AOVs Passes are still rendered, but all Channels are black.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  1. Open new blender scene
  2. Go to Render Properties, set Render Engine Cycles
  3. Go to View Layer Properties, add a Shader AOV, name it (abc)
  4. Go to the Shading Workbench, give your cube material an AOV output with some color (blue), name it like your AOV pass (abc).
  5. Hit F12 to render: AOV pass renders normally (expected behaviour)
  6. Now go again to the Render Properties, set Open Shading Language to true
  7. Hit F12 again to render. Now, the AOV pass (abc) should be blank. Color and Alpha are black.

This has been reported before, see #79888 (AOVs not working with OSL at all), #77522 (AOV output not rendering when "open shading language" enabled in render settings)

OSL is a TODO tracked in this task #73266 (Improve custom shader AOVs)

I think we have to close this, will merge into #73266...

@Blendify : should we mention this in the manual?
https://docs.blender.org/manual/en/dev/render/layers/passes.html#render-cycles-passes-aov

Sorry for the duplicate, didn't found the original issue.
It would be great to mention it in the manual, as I spend two days hunting the issue.
Thanks for your time! <3

OSL may need work.

However I think this bug should be reopen.

It's not about having the AOV's working with OSL enabled, as it should, but that can be part of the OSL improvements, it's more a user experience problem.

If you have your scene perfectly working and suddenly you enable OSL and you get Black passes, that does not make sense and since there is no warning at all, this is very confusing, so apart from the OSL improvement, this is still a bug of functionality and UX.

I would vote to reopen it and resolve it with a warning or something similar if the problem cannot be solved, but as it is right now it's a bug and should not just be mentioned in the manual, but also in the UI, maybe below the "enable OSL" checkbox.

I mention you @lichtwerk since you closed this :)
