2.90 crashing randomly when working on renders or textures. #80560

System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.18362-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: Intel(R) HD Graphics 520 Intel 4.5.0 - Build 24.20.100.6299

Blender Version
Broken: version: 2.90.0, branch: master, commit date: 2020-08-31 11:26, hash: 0330d1af29
Worked: (newest version of Blender that worked as expected)

Short description of error
The new version of Blender (2.9) keeps crashing randomnly. It's quite instable.
I cannot provide any files because it really crashes randomnly, specially when I'm in cycle live view and when I edit materials or textures at the same time.
It also crashes sometimes, when I've rendered an image and I try to save it manually. The software just crashes after I've saved my image.

It doesn't crash only on one file, but on almost all new and old files really randomnly (probably once every 30-45 minutes)

please start Blender with blender_debug_log.cmd script and use it normally. when Blender crashes, you'll find debug log, system info and crash.txt file.
please upload them.

Hi !
Thank you, can you explain me with more details how to achieve that?
I'm not that technic... :-) I'll do it when I'll know how to start Blender in this mode.

Thanks in advance

The script can be found in Blender installation directory. Since it's a script you should be able to double click to run it I guess. It will launch Blender and logs will appear after Blender quits.

I have been using blender for 3 years (2.79 and most versions in the 2.8 cycle) but I have never experienced as many seemingly random crashes as I do with 2.9.
I installed 2.9 about a week ago and have probably had 15-20 crashes. Crashes happen both when modelling, when moving an object or sometimes even when I press a button. When I open the file again I cannot reproduce the issue it just happens at random. Next time I get a crash i will upload a log.

So this time it crashed a few seconds after I hit render. Here are the 3 text files generated.

I got one by painting while an animation was happening, and although I didn't had animation on when I got the crashes before, this looks like a random inconsistent crash(I'm trying to reproduce it again and it isn't happening everytime)

I can't, its a fairly heavy file to post here, but I just noticed that its not a hard to reproduce bug and may not be related to this Thread. I'm pretty sure some time ago before 2.9 I got a crash while weight painting a model while it was being animated.

I don't know if I make a new report for this one, but it you wanna try it I'll leave this here.(start the animation and start painting on the 3d model)

Updated the driver to 452.06 but got a crash about an hour later. This crash was actually at the same place as last time, just after hitting F12 to render the scene.

Today I have probably had 6-7 crashes
I started the scene in 2.9 and now I am afraid to open the scene in 2.8.3 because I don't know how well blender handles going back to an older version?

  • Change viewlayer = Crash
  • Hit F12 = Crash
  • Unhide a collection = Crash

Is there anything else I can do? Should I upload more crash reports?
I didn't have any crashes with 2.8.0-2.8.3 versions so maybe I should just try going back and see how well things go..

yesterday I was painting a texture and when I changed the workstation from texture paint to shading my blender crashed. Unfortunately I wasn't running with debug log

I'm pretty sure .blend files are Backward compatible across all the >2.8 versions. You can try it with a backup if you want.

This may be a duplicate of #80042 (Crash switching to material preview due to incorrect free with Cycles).

There is backwards compatibility in that loading older files in newer Blender versions should generally work, but loading newer files in older versions (forward compatibility) is not guaranteed in general. There can be some data loss.

I had these random crashes while working on textures using eevee and in solid view mode, so I don't think this is related to cycles

Hey good news! I have been working with 2.9.1 for a few days now and I get a lot less crashes now, so something good has definitely been done to that version.
I have gotten 2 crashes in 4 days and both times was when I hit F12 for render in cycles. But now that I know where the crashes occur I just save before hitting F12 so its a lot less annoying now :)

I think I finally found a consistent way to reproduce this bug. the setup is the folowing

  • a sphere subdivided twice + one subdivision in multires but set to 0 subdivisions in viewport
  • a 4k texture

bug.blend

  • Open the file and paint it a bit with white color, than change to black and paint more
  • Once you change to object mode it will probably crash, if not try again.

I'm getting this crash almost all the time in blender 2.91 from yesterday commit and 2.9.

This appears to be a duplicate of #81775. The bug that caused the crash appears to be fixed in master, as I cannot reproduce it, just like the other developers in the linked ticket.

@Diogo_Valadares Can you check if this issue still occurs in the daily build of 2.92 ?

yes, it no longer crashes, as in #81775 the bug changed from a crash to a weird behavior, but I think the crash while trying to render is a different bug, @coindrop and @Ekiwnox could try testing it now.

Yeah I think the render crash is another bug, I still get it 1-2 times daily but not every time I hit F12 or Ctrl+F12.
But 2.9.1 seems a lot more stable in general than 2.9.0 :)

Ok, then I'll merge this ticket. The rendering bug would be a separate issue. If you can still reproduce that one, please create a new report through Help > Report a Bug in Blender and attach the crash log (*.crash.txt) from C:\Users\[your username]\AppData\Local\Temp\ (replace [your username] with your actual username).

@robert-18 Guetzkow (rjg) I have been using 2.91.0 since it came out ~2 weeks ago and I haven't had any render crashes so far, so I will consider it fixed.
Great job to whoever fixed the rendering issue :)
