Git Error when running 'make update' on Windows #81475

System Information
Operating system: Windows 10 Pro
Graphics card: RTX 2080 Ti

Blender Version
Broken: 2.90.1, and also happened to me when building 2.90 alpha
Worked: none

When I run 'make update' from either the Visual Studio Command Prompt or the standard Windows Command Prompt, I get the error "fatal: not a git repository (or any of the parent directories): .git". I have narrowed down the source of the error to the file build_files/utils/make_utils.py, in the function "make_utils.git_branch", called from make_update.py. Calling os.getcwd() from that function returns my home directory '~', which indicates that the script is not running in the Blender git repository. This should be fixable by a quick call to os.chdir().

Simply check out the git repository on Windows and run 'make update' from the Windows Command Prompt.

You should be running the command from blender directory, not from ~/. Is that the case ?
Also, if there's a fix, please consider creating a patch https://developer.blender.org/differential/diff/create/
