Blender Version
Broken: version: 2.91.0 Alpha, branch: master, commit date: 2020-10-10 16:05, hash: 1b04eb6c44
Worked: (newest version of Blender that worked as expected)

Short description of error
the "d" hotkey to swap sculpting meshes does not work.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Open blender
duplicate the default cube twice into different positions
enter sculpt mode
try to swap to another mesh by pressing "d"
nothing happens

According to c79b913624, the keyboard shortcut to swap between meshs in sculpt mode has been shifted to the experimental tab of user preferences due to issues with undo and now it must be enabled for it to be used. So technically this isn't a bug.

However, the fact that the Switch object operator shows up in the keymap in the user preferences when the feature is disabled may be a bug? Not entirely sure.

cc @PabloDobarro

If you want to know how to enable this feature now that it's in the experimental tab, follow these steps:

  1. From the top of Blender select Edit -> Preferences.
  2. From the tabs on the left, select Interface.
  3. Enable the option Developer Extras.
  4. From the tabs on the left select Experimental.
  5. Enable Switch Object Operator.

Not exactly sure how to proceed here.

I think it would be possible to react more precisely in RNA callbacks for some of the experimental features (rna_userdef_XXX_update) - removing keymap entries e.g. should be possible.
Not quite sure if this is the way to go though?

Philipp Oeser changed title from sculpting hotkey to switch meshes "d" does not work to Experimental Features: some features still (parially) available (hotkeys, menu entries) even if feature is disabled (e.g. sculpting hotkey "D" to switch meshes) 2020-10-14 11:48:07 +02:00

This shouldn't be an experimental feature due to a keyboard conflict I think. At least not for that long. If it is in the agenda for 2.91 the remaining issue should be addressed.

@PabloDobarro do you have an updated status on this?

(as for the RNA code, there is ways to make it work, but in this case I would focus more on getting this figured out than to over-engineer the - already abused - experimental system)

In Blender 3.0 this feature was updated, changing the keymap, and is no longer an experimental feature.
